For months, we’ve been writing about the forthcoming Sony Playstation 3 Slim console and the fact that it is a likely consequence of this that Sony would cut prices of it’s current PS3. Well, as expected – hoped – at a press conference in Cologne, Germany, today, Sony finally told us what we already knew – the Sony PS3 Slim is real .. and coming very soon.
However, as always, there was one last twist before the official announcement. Following hot on the heels of the mistake by Amazon Germany – they listed the new PS3 Slim two weeks before today’s official announcement – Kmart.com also jumped the gun and accidentally posted an ad on its home page that revealed a price cut to the old 80GB and 160GB PS3 consoles to $299 and $399 respectively, oh, and they also hinted at the impending arrival of the new PS3 Slim – doh!
In Cologne, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai made the official announcement, taking the stage and announcing the PS3 was getting a new model and that indeed it was called the PS3 Slim.
The Playstation 3 Slim is hitting stores the first week in September and will cost $299 in the US, €299 or 29980 yen. Hirai says it has the same features and functions as the current PS3 but is 33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter, and comes with a 120GB hard drive.
So there you have it. What do you think?
